Educators of the Year

April Saxton, Music Teacher

Hello, my name is April Saxton, and I graduated from Georgia Southern in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. I teach general music at J.W. Arnold Elementary in Clayton County, Georgia. With much appreciation and gratitude I was chosen teacher of the year by my colleagues and administrators for 2015-2016 school year. At Arnold Elementary I teach more than just singing and playing instruments. The students learn through centers, interactive games, and integrated technology. The students at Arnold Elementary perform four PTO programs that integrate what they are learning in their classroom curriculum. For the past years, I have sent students to participate in the annual Clayton County Musicals. I am the sponsor and music director of the Arnold Soaring Eagles Chorus who are well-known throughout the community. I also choose a selective group of chorus members to participate in the annual Elementary Statewide Honor Chorus. When my students leave Arnold Elementary, they continue their love for music in band, chorus, theatre, and orchestra at the M.D. Roberts Fine Arts Magnet program. I plan to pursue my masters’ degree in Music Education at the University of Southern Mississippi through their online program. I am deeply grateful for the music professors at Georgia Southern for making me the innovative music educator I am today.
